Product Description

This recording showcases the unmistakable sound, style, and sincerity of Arnold Jacobs, legendary tubist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 1944-1988. It is a unique audio portrait comprised entirely of recordings of his own voice from master classes, rare radio and television interviews, as well as rare recordings which demonstrate his amazing virtuosity in solo, ensemble performances with CSO colleagues, and orchestral performances with the famed Chicago Symphony.

Musical selections include: Fanfare (Buxtehude) * Horn Concerto No.1 in E-flat (Strauss) * Czardas (Mozart) * Carnival of Venice (Clarke) * Concerto for Bass Tuba, 1st. mvt. (Vaughan Williams) * Canzona per sonare No. 2 (Gabrieli) * Sonatine for Brass Quintet (Bozza) * Chicago Symphony orchestral excerpts of Bartok, Berlioz, Mussorgsky, Nielsen, and Wagner.

The accompanying booklet includes extensive annotations on Jacobs' teaching philosophies and observations by Gene Pokorny, current tubist of the Chicago Symphony and heir to the Jacobs tradition.
